Joint supplement labels can be confusing. Glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen and hyaluronic acid are frequently listed together, but they are not four names for the same ingredient. Each has a different structural or functional role within a dog’s joints.
Understanding those differences makes it easier to compare dog joint supplements in New Zealand without relying on marketing phrases or simply choosing the product with the longest ingredient list.
This guide explains what each ingredient is, why it is included and what current canine research can—and cannot—tell us.
A quick comparison of common dog joint supplement ingredients
Glucosamine: An amino sugar used by the body in the production of compounds found in cartilage and joint tissues.
Chondroitin sulphate: A natural component of cartilage that contributes to its structure and water-retaining properties.
Type II collagen: The principal form of collagen found in cartilage. Undenatured type II collagen is different from hydrolysed collagen and is generally included at much smaller daily amounts.
Hyaluronic acid: A naturally occurring substance found in joint fluid and connective tissues, known for its ability to retain water.
These ingredients may appear individually, but many joint-support formulas combine them with ingredients such as Boswellia, omega oils, vitamin C and manganese.
What is glucosamine for dogs?
Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino sugar. The body uses it as one of the building blocks involved in producing glycosaminoglycans—compounds found in cartilage and other connective tissues.
Dog supplements commonly contain glucosamine hydrochloride or glucosamine sulphate. When comparing products, check which form is used and how much is supplied in your dog’s recommended daily serving.
Glucosamine is often sourced from crustaceans. If your dog has a known food sensitivity, check the product composition carefully before feeding it.
What does the evidence say about glucosamine?
Research results are mixed. Some individual canine trials have reported improvements when glucosamine and chondroitin were administered together. However, a 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis found that the overall evidence did not support a reliable pain-relieving effect from glucosamine-chondroitin products in dogs with osteoarthritis.
That does not mean glucosamine has no place in a nutritional joint-support formula. It means owners should not regard it as a proven pain medicine or expect it to replace veterinary treatment.
What is chondroitin for dogs?
Chondroitin sulphate is a glycosaminoglycan found naturally in cartilage. Its structure helps cartilage attract and retain water, contributing to the cushioning and load-bearing properties of healthy joint tissue.
It is frequently paired with glucosamine because the two ingredients relate to different components of cartilage structure. Chondroitin may be sourced from porcine, bovine, marine or other animal tissues, so check the label if ingredient origin matters for your dog.
As with glucosamine, the presence of chondroitin on the front of a package tells you very little by itself. Look for the amount delivered in the recommended daily serving and whether the manufacturer clearly identifies the ingredient form.

What is collagen for dogs?
Collagen is a structural protein found throughout the body, including in skin, tendons, ligaments and cartilage. However, not all forms of collagen used in supplements are the same.
Hydrolysed collagen
Hydrolysed collagen has been broken into smaller peptides. It is generally supplied as a nutritional source of collagen peptides and amino acids.
Undenatured type II collagen
Type II collagen is the primary collagen found in cartilage. “Undenatured” means its three-dimensional structure has been preserved during processing.
Undenatured type II collagen is used at much smaller quantities than most hydrolysed collagen products, so the milligram amounts should not be compared directly. A lower number does not automatically mean an inferior product—the ingredient form and intended use are different.
Clinical studies have investigated undenatured type II collagen in dogs with mobility or osteoarthritis-related concerns. These include a clinical evaluation of undenatured type II collagen in dogs and a randomised study of undenatured type II collagen combined with Boswellia.
Some studies have reported encouraging results. However, the evidence base remains smaller than it is for established veterinary treatments, and individual results can vary.
What is hyaluronic acid for dogs?
Hyaluronic acid is another glycosaminoglycan, but its role differs from glucosamine and chondroitin. It occurs naturally in synovial fluid—the fluid within movable joints—and is highly effective at binding water.
This contributes to the viscosity and lubricating qualities of healthy joint fluid. Hyaluronic acid is therefore commonly included in multi-ingredient joint supplements intended to provide broad nutritional support.
Evidence relating specifically to oral hyaluronic acid supplements in dogs is more limited than the biological explanations sometimes used in advertising. It is best considered as one component of a well-disclosed formula rather than a guaranteed standalone solution.
Is one joint ingredient better than the others?
There is no single ingredient that is automatically best for every dog.
Glucosamine and chondroitin relate primarily to components associated with cartilage. Type II collagen is a structural cartilage protein, while hyaluronic acid is strongly associated with joint fluid and water retention.
They may therefore be used together in a multi-ingredient formula. However, more ingredients do not necessarily make a product better. Consider:
- The amount supplied in the daily serving for your dog’s weight
- The specific form of each ingredient
- Ingredient sourcing and potential sensitivities
- Whether every ingredient and amount is disclosed
- How easily and consistently your dog will take the product
- The daily cost at your dog’s required serving
- Whether the product is appropriate alongside your dog’s diet, supplements and medicines
Consistency matters. A carefully formulated product provides little practical value if its taste or format means your dog regularly refuses it.

2. Look for disclosed quantities
A named ingredient without a stated amount is difficult to compare. Clear disclosure helps you understand what you are actually purchasing.
3. Check ingredient sources
Glucosamine may come from crustaceans, while chondroitin and collagen may be derived from different animal sources. This can matter for dogs with known sensitivities.
4. Compare the cost per day
A cheaper container is not necessarily better value. Divide the purchase price by the number of daily servings provided for your dog.
5. Consider the whole dog
Joint supplements work within a broader mobility plan. Appropriate body weight, regular controlled exercise, suitable footing, nail and paw care, and veterinary assessment can all be important.
When should I speak to my veterinarian?
Arrange a veterinary assessment if your dog has:
- Sudden or persistent lameness
- Joint swelling or obvious pain
- Difficulty rising, climbing stairs or getting into the car
- A significant change in gait or willingness to exercise
- Reduced mobility following an injury
- Symptoms that are getting worse
- An existing medical condition or regular medication
A supplement should not be used to delay diagnosis or replace prescribed veterinary treatment. Your veterinarian can also help you avoid unnecessary ingredient duplication when combining foods, treats, supplements and medicines.
Frequently asked questions
Can I give my dog human glucosamine?
Do not assume a human supplement is suitable for a dog. Human products may use different concentrations or contain sweeteners and additional ingredients that are inappropriate for pets. Xylitol, in particular, is toxic to dogs. Ask your veterinarian before using a product that has not been formulated for canine use.
Can glucosamine cure arthritis in dogs?
No nutritional supplement should be presented as a cure for arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a veterinary condition requiring appropriate diagnosis and management. Joint supplements may be considered as one part of a broader support plan.
Can I combine two dog joint supplements?
Sometimes, but check the complete ingredient lists first. Using multiple products may unintentionally duplicate glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen, botanicals, vitamins or minerals. Discuss combinations with your veterinarian, particularly if your dog receives medication.
Are joint supplements only for senior dogs?
